CEBU CITY, Philippines—Boholano boxer Danrick “Trigger Man” Sumabong of Harada Boxing Gym put up a decent stand in his first fight in Japan after settling for a split draw against Japanese Kantaro Juri last September 13, 2022 at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
The 23-year old Sumabong, who rose to popularity for putting a gallant stand against unbeaten IBF No. 1 super flyweight champion Jade Bornea, forced Juri into a grinding eight-rounder split draw. Judges scored the fight 77-75, 75-77, and 76-76.
Sumabong, who fights under Harada Boxing Gym of Bohol, absorbed his first draw. He has 12 wins, nine by knockouts, and two defeats.
Before the draw, Sumabong was on a five-fight winning streak dating back to 2019 to June 2022. He defeated Margarito Moya, John Rey Lauza, Jonathan Francisco, Francis Jay Diaz, and Royder Lloyd Borbon in their rematch.
He knockouted Moya and Borbon, while he clinched the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Youth super flyweight title by winning via unanimous decision against Diaz.
In 2018, Sumabong caught everyone’s attention when he fought toe-to-toe against Bornea for the WBO Oriental Youth super flyweight title, which ended in a unanimous decision win in favor of the latter.
Meanwhile, Alvin Lagumbay faltered in his fight against Andy Hiraoka for the WBO Asia Pacific Super Light weight title in the same fight card which featured Sumabong and Juri.
Lagumbay lost via a second round technical knockout, dropping his record to 13-6-1 (win-loss-draw). Hiraoka remained unbeaten in 21-0 (win-loss) with 16 knockouts.
