CEBU CITY, Philippines — As the Cebu City government commemorated the 159th birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio, Cebu City Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia encouraged the youth to look at the life of the father of the Philippine Revolution as an inspiration towards self improvement.

“My dear friends, today, we celebrate the birthday of one of our national heroes Andres Bonifacio, the father of the Philippine revolution. On his natal day, I encourage our dear youth, the bright hope and promise of our nation to look at the life of Andres Bonifacio as a source of inspiration,” he said.

“In his life, we will find wonderful qualities, such as bravery, selflessness, patriotism, nationalism, nationalism and deep love for country,” he added.

Garcia, chairman of the Cebu City Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (CHAC), and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama led the city government’s wreath laying ceremony and program for Bonifacio at the Plaza Independencia on Wednesday, November 30, 2022.

Garcia recalled Bonifacio’s “humble and simple” beginnings, as accounted in the books.

Bonifacio, Garcia, said was born into a middle-class family and only finished the equivalent of what would be today as Grade Four.

“But Andres Bonifacio was far from illiterate. He was said to have been self educated and would immerse himself in books…I hope all of us can aspire to be as passionate and hungry for continued to be as dedicated and disciplined for self improvement, and most importantly to have the heart and sense of duty to apply our knowledge, our skills, and our talents for the good of others,” the vice mayor added.
