MANDAUE CITY, Philippines — Policemen of the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) have arrested 65 individuals, who were caught betting on online cockfighting (e-sabong) in a span of four days in Mandaue City.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Franc Rudolf Oriol, MCPO deputy city director for operations and spokesperson said that the arrested individuals were from the 27 illegal gambling operations conducted from Thursday, Dec. 8, to Sunday, Dec. 11.

Oriol said this was the second most highest number of individuals arrested in a week.

He said the highest number of arrests of individuals caught betting on illegal gambling games was two weeks ago.

He, however, could not how many individuals were caught on those operations.

He said that the report from individuals helped them to the arrest of the suspects.

“Kasagaran nila magtapok like using cellphones unya magpustaanay sila nga sila-sila ra pod niya ang uban pod sending their payment through Gcash and some other electronic payment method,” said Oriol.

Online Sabong was banned in May by former President Rodrigo Duterte because of the social damage caused by the gambling activity.

“Dili man hinuon alarma gyud sa tibuok barangay but naay mga individuals sa atoang siyudad nga nagpadayun ani’ng kalahukan,” said Oriol.

The arrested individuals are facing charges for violation of Presidential Decree 1602 on illegal gambling, in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act No. 10175 or the “Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.”

Moreover, they also arrested 25 street level individuals involved in illegal drugs and 12 wanted persons during their law enforcement operation last week.
