CEBU CITY, Philippines — Cebuana international kegler Alexis Sy-Chua ruled the ladies open tournament of the Philippine Bowling Federation (PBF) 4th Philippine International Open 2023 at the Coronado Lanes in Starmall, Mandaluyong City, Manila over the weekend.

It was a fitting win for Sy who wasn’t able to compete in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games after the host country Cambodia, excluded the bowling tournament from the meet.

SEAG Silver medalist

Sy, a silver medalist in the 31st SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam last year, defeated Malaysia’s Siti Safiyah Amirah in the final round by knocking out 279 pins, over the latter’s 216 pinfalls.

Amirah advanced to the final round after beating eventual third placer Jazreel Tan in their match. Amirah scored 209 pinfalls, while Tan had 191 pinfalls, in their duel.

Local pool qualifying round

Before ruling the tournament, Sy finished the local pool qualifying round at the No. 3 spot with 1,313 pinfalls behind fellow Filipinas Krizziah Macatula (1,337) and Grace Gella (1,349) who finished at the No. 2 and No 1 spots, respectively. They automatically advanced to the second round.

Meanwhile, Tan and Safiyah finished first and second places, respectively in the overseas pool qualifying round.

In the second round of the competition, Sy flexed her winning form by scoring 1,665 pinfalls to emerge as the top bowler after eight games, to qualify her automatically in the final round.

P300,ooo prize

Meanwhile, Tan and Safiyah finished second and third, respectively, forging their stepladder final round showdown.

Sy pocketed P300,000 for ruling the tournament, while Amirah went home with P150,000, and Tan with P75,000.

On the other hand, Singaporean Darren Ong ruled the men’s open division by beating Syafig Ridhwan of Malaysia, 248 pinfalls over the latter’s 175, in the final round.
