MANDAUE CITY, Cebu—With the memory of their 2018 loss still fresh in their minds, players and coaches of Barangay Looc made sure they would end up on top this time in the Mandaue City Mayor’s Cup.

Banking on their will to exact revenge, Barangay Looc finally emerged victorious in the seniors division, taking down Paknaan, 75-71, on August 17, 2023, at the packed Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

The win netted Looc the P50,000 cash prize and a trophy but more importantly got bragging rights of having exacted revenge against the team that denied them the title in 2018.

“It was a tough loss last 2018, so we wanted to get back at them and bring the championship trophy to our barangay,” said head coach Skipper Cabahug.

University of the Visayas banger and former UP Fighting Maroon Jancork Cabahug led the victory against Paknaan with 25 points.

Looc’s Marte Añabieza was also named season Most Valuable Player (MVP) while teammate Daryl Guerrero was named Best Shooter in the Mythical Five.

Coach Cabahug said having the team in the same page was the key to winning the title.

“The team was willing to sacrifice everything, from giving it all on the court,  adjusting their minutes on the court just to win. The mindset of the team was to give whatever it takes just to win the championship,” Cabahug said.

Looc also topped the midget division by routing Barangay Casili, 63-47, in the championship game.
