CEBU CITY, Philippines – An accident at the South Road Properties (SRP) claimed the life of a motorcycle rider on Wednesday night, September 13, 2023.

The motorcycle rider died after he was crushed by a refrigerated van that lost control while traveling along the Cebu South Coastal Road of the SRP.

Jonathan Tumulak, chief of the City of Talisay Traffic Operations and Development Authority (CT-TODA), told CDN Digital in a phone interview that the driver of the refrigerated van allegedly lost control of his vehicle due to the slippery road. It was raining in Cebu City at the time of the accident.

When the van went out of control, it toppled and unfortunately fell on the motorcycle rider.

In its official Facebook page, the City of Talisay Traffic Operations and Development Authority (CT-TODA) reported that the vehicular accident at the SRP occurred along the north bound lane in Barangay Dumlog, near the 6th street of Carmen Village in Talisay City.

The SRP accident happened past 7 p.m.

CT-TODA identified the victim as 33-year-old Isagani Alvarado, a resident of Aloguinsan town in southwestern Cebu.  The driver of the van was identified as Weng Lee, a resident of Liloan town, northern Cebu.

Tumulak said that both vehicles were heading north with the motorcycle traveling in front of the van.

The van, containing ice cream products, were reportedly heading back after delivering products in the southern area.

He also said that the driver of the van told authorities that he slammed on the brakes after the motorcycle swerved to his lane.

“Nikalit kuno og sira sa iyang agianan ang kining maong motor, hinungdan nga nikalit siya og tamak sa iyang brake. Pagtamak sa iyang brake, mao to nagsayaw sayaw na ang maong van hangtod nga nahitabo ang disgrasya,” Tumulak said.

(The motorcycle suddenly cut him that’s why he had to slam on the brakes. When he did this, he lost control of the van and the accident happened.)

According to Tumulak, the van fell on its right side, falling on the the motorcycle rider.

He added that Alvarado got separated from his motorcycle and got stuck under the van with his waist badly crushed.

Upon receiving the report about the incident, personnel of the CT-TODA, Bureau of Fire, and Talisay rescue team immediately responded to the accident scene.

At past 8:00 p.m., Alvarado was rescued by emergency personnel and was rushed to the Cebu South Medical Center for medical treatment.  However, he died later in the hospital, said Tumulak.

According to Tumulak, Lee is now at the custody of the police. He will be facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide.
