CEBU CITY, Philippines — Team Cebu City Muay Thai yielded 12 medals in the recently concluded Muay Thai Regional Championships-Visayas Leg 2023 that was held in Bago City, Negros Occidental over the weekend.
Team Cebu City’s 12 Muay Thai fighters headed by Master Benigno “Ekin” Caniga Jr., the group’s head coach, finished their four-day campaign with three gold medals, four silvers, and five bronzes.
Their medal haul earned them the fifth overall in the tournament which featured various Muay Thai teams that represented LGUS and towns across the Visayas.
Team Cebu City’s gold medalists were Tristan John Suan, Michael Rabayos, and Junathan Visto.
Meanwhile, Team Cebu City’s silver medalists were Luther Berandoy, Jhon Agustin Simbahon, Ken Calvin Caburnay, and Edgar Caburnay.
Also, Candy Marie Yongco, Prime Jedrek Melocoton, Mark Junry Salinas Cuyos, Tristan John Tacle, and Hilken John Tacle were Team Cebu City Muay Thai’s bronze medalists.
Despite not winning the overall title, Caniga and his Muay Thai fighters backed by sportsman and Cebu City Councilor Dondon Hontiveros will campaign in the upcoming 2023 Muay Thai National Championships that is slated on November 13-19, 2023 at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City.
This tournament is a crucial test for Team Cebu City’s Muay Thai fighters as it also serves as the Philippine Muay Thai team’s official selection for its national training pool. It will draw the country’s best amateur Muay Thai fighters vying not just for the gold medal, but also a slot for the national team training pool. / dcb
