Lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) in San Fernando town in southern Cebu launched their organization yesterday.
The San Fernando Organization LGBT Initiative for Democracy (Solid) is the first LGBT organization that advocates equal rights.
Junard Abalos, Solid president told Cebu Daily News that the organization was launched to address concerns of members of the LGBT community on violence and discrimination because of their sexual preferences.
San Fernando Vice Mayor Mico Canoy said that they urged LGBT community in the town to launch the organization.
“We also encourage them to process the accreditation of their organization so that it will also be recognized by the council,” Canoy added.
Canoy added that the LGU in San Fernando is supporting the organization’s call for equal rights.
After the opening motorcade, Solid members had a coastal cleanup at barangay South Poblacion.
“We are conducting this activity so that the people will be aware that we exist and we can do something for the community,” Abalos told CDN.
The coastal cleanup was followed by a feeding program that benefited around 100 children in barangay South Poblacion.
“The people in the community expressed their warm welcome to us. It might be little but it is a way to give back something to the community,” Abalos added.
