CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball defending champions, the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, flexed its might against the Cebu Institute of Technology – University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 90-60, on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Green Lancers closed out a 30-point blowout game against the Wildcats. It was in contrast to their hard-earned 59-56 win against the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu Fighting Maroons last September 30.
This time, the Gary Cortes-led Green Lancers were in command as early as the first half of the game with a 29-point lead, 51-22.
They stretched their lead to 30, 64-34, in the third period, and maintained a huge lead midway in the final period.
The Wildcats of head coach Gerry Cavan were able to cut the lead to 20, 47-67, from the efforts of Ivan Ares and Clark Con-Ui.
Both teams traded baskets, but the Wildcats’ efforts were a little too late, resulting to their third straight loss in the league.
UV’s sharpshooter AJ Sacayan topscored the game with 22 points, 11 of which were scored in the second period.
Kent Ivo Salarda erupted in the fourth period, scoring 12 of his 18 total points for UV.
Christopher Isabelo and Froiland Maglasang combined for 18 points for the defending champions.
Ares and Con-Ui scored 12 points apiece, while Jhon Rey Guinita had 15, and Rockwald Toh added 10 points in the Wildcats’ losing efforts. / dcb
