CEBU CITY, Philippines – The proposed construction of additional floors of the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) is set to start this month. This was confirmed by the CCMC officer-in-charge.

Dr. Peter Mancao, a cardiothoracic surgeon and the current officer-in-charge of CCMC, confirmed that the additional construction of CCMC would start at the beginning of this month.

He added that although a final meeting had not been carried out yet, they had already anticipated and were certain of the decision to start construction this month.

“Mosugod na ta. Actually, ang meeting gyud final tomorrow pa. Pero ato naman nang gicalendar nga February, ang vertical and horizontal [development] sa CCMC sugdan na gyud by February”, Macao said.

(We will start. Actually, the final meeting will still be tomorrow. But we already calendared it on February, the vertical and horizontal [development] in CCMC will start this February.)

According to Mancao, the vertical aspect of the construction consists of the 8th, 9th, and 10th floors, while the horizontal are those that include the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th floors, which are already in their furnishing process.

Along with this, he also revealed the departments will be designated on those floors.

“Ang kanang 8, 9, 10, mao man gyud na ang atong accommodation; ang atong mga wards. Unya kanang 4th floor mao na siya ang… is the operating room and the delivery room complex. Unya 5th floor is the ICU – Pediatric ICU ug ICU complex. Unya ang 6th floor is the Admin. Unya 7th will be Operation Smile and INC II. 8th will be the ward, 9th will be the ward, and 10th will be the ward”, he said.

(The 8, 9, 10, that is where our accommodation; our wards. Then the 4th floor that is …the operating room and the delivery room complex. Then the 5th floor is the ICU — Pediatric ICU and ICU Complex. Then the 6th floor is the admin. Then the 7th will be Operation Smile and INC II. 8th will be the ward, 9th will be ward and 10th will be the ward.)

When asked about the estimated target completion date of the construction, Mancao said that if the construction would continuously push through, it would be possible to complete the project within a year.

“Within, ug masugdan lang guro ug kuan… matodo-todo lang gyud within 1 year gyud na. 8,9,10 gud na”, he said.

With the expansion work in the CCMC, Mancao shared they are also expecting to accommodate more patients since they are targeting the facility to have 500 beds.

“…plano gyud ani, it’s supposed to be a 500-bed hospital. Karon, we are only at… wa gani ta kaabot ug 200, mga 180 ana unya puno ta pirme. So, we target nga muabot gyud tag mga 500,” Mancao added.

(…the plan for this, it’s supposed to be a 500-bed hospital. Now, we are only at … we even did not reach 200, we are at 180 and it is always full. So we target that this can reach 500.)

Moreover, Mancao said that since CCMC was already accredited by the National Training Program (NTP),  the presence of consultants, bearing specialties in their respective departments had already been acquired by the hospital since it was one of the requirements to pass the accreditation.

As for the contractor, he said that Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama had already eyed Engr. Pericles Dakay to take the lead.

Dakay is the chairperson of the Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB) and a board member of the Construction Industry Authority of the Philippines (CIAP).

“So karon ang gihangyo ni Mayor Mike nga mo take sa lead is si Engineer Dakay. Si engineer na ang mo kuan… kay I think bisag unsa nga contractor ilaha raman gihapon e-outsource,” he said.

(So now what Mayor Mike asked is that Engineer Dakay will take the lead.

Mancao however, did not touch on the budget of the additional construction as the funds will be privately sourced.

He also clarified that the improvements to be done at the CCMC would be of no cost to the city government. | by CTU Intern Kim Ablaña
