BPBL Season 2 Central Visayas finals opener: UC, SHS-AdC beat foes

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Top bets’ University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters and the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles got off to a winning start in their respective campaigns in the Batang Pilipino Basketball League (BPBL) Season 2 Central Visayas finals held in Carmen, Cebu on Friday. 

UC of head coach Joever Samonte thrashed the host team, Carmen Niños, 74-49, to log their first win in the 18-under division of the BPBL Season 2 Central Visayas finals.

Lourdonnie Cuyos was named player of the game after unloading 18 points for UC, while his teammate Mikyle Lejarde added 13 markers in their lopsided win. 

Carmen’s Azriel Mata tallied 11 markers in their losing efforts. 

Meanwhile, the Magis Eagles narrowly escaped Bohol’s Brodie Seven Hasslers, 63-61, in the 16-under division of the BPBL Season 2 Central Visayas finals.

Three of SHS-AdC’s players, headed by Xander Magbanua, scored double digits. Magbanua scored 14 points and was named the player of the game, while Ben Chua and Meon Dorban each chipped in 10 markers. 

Gumer Maghuyop finished with a game-high of 16 points but it wasn’t enough to put the Brodie Seven Hasslers into the winning side. His teammate Lord Gepayo added 10 points to their losing efforts.

Despite the defeat, Brodie Seven Hasslers bounced back with a 69-62 win over the Young Ballers Club in their second game in the BPBL Season 2 Central Visayas finals. This time, Bryan Guingguing paced Brodie with 16 points, while Mark Pocoy had 11 points. 

John Dejuan scored eight points for the Young Ballers Club. 

In the other BPBL 16-under game, Ronbucz Basketball of the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Green Lancers of coach Ronald Bucao defeated Barangay Estaca-Compostela, 71-66. 

Gabriel Gendrauli was the lone double-digit scorer for Ronbucz Basketball with 10 points. 

Lance Joseph To-ong had 14 points, and Alexander Montes with 12 points in Barangay Estaca’s loss. 

In the 13-under, Mommy’s Choice Danao City shocked the favored University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors, 70-61. 

Jayeon Karl Barriga erupted for 25 points, while Achkie Enriquez scored 18 points in their huge win over the Baby Warriors. 

Larry Henry had 18 points for USC, while Joryll Ybanez and Enzo Garcia each had 10 points in their defeat.
