It’s not just the architecture, but understand the spirit, content and history.”

This was the message of  Ven Yeung Guang, head abbess of Fu Guang Shan Philippines, during the opening ceremony of the 9th Gabii Sa Kabilin last night.

The opening ceremony  at Fo Guang Shan Chu Un Temple showcased Buddhist teachings and culture.

The program started with an opening dance titled “We are One” by BLIA-YAD Performing Arts Cebu in blue, red and gold costumes.

A Buddhist prayer led by Guang followed by an excerpt from the Siddhartha musical or the life of Buddha was performed.

Guang also encouraged the participants to practice the “acts of goodness” — do good deeds, speak good words, think good thoughts as parts of Buddha’s teaching.

“Bring home truth, sincerity, kindness and sincerity. To the families, parents and children with them, bring goodness to your home,” she added.

The participants were allowed to do the Buddha bathing and write Chinese characters through calligraphy.

The Fo Guang Shan Chu Un Temple is one of the branches of the worldwide Sangha of Fu Guang Shan based in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

The opening ceremony was attended by Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, Talisay City Mayor Johnny V. delos Reyes and  Dr. Jocelyn Gerra, executive director  of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI).
