Woman, 75, escapes burning house

Fire razed a two-story house in barangay Ibabao-Estancia, Mandaue City last Tuesday night.

The 75-year-old houseowner, Leoncia Cortes, was rescued by  neighbors after she nearly got trapped in the burning house in S. B. Cabahug Street.

Cortes, a retired government worker, lived alone.

The fire started in the kitchen where the woman tried to boil water using an LPG stove.

While waiting for the water to boil, the woman went to her room to do some chores.  The kitchen was already on fire when she returned a few minutes later.

Cortes ran downstairs e only to discover that she had locked the gate  earlier.  She cried out for help.

Neighbors had to destroy the gate to rescue the woman.

Fire damage was pegged at P500,000.
