MANDAUE CITY, Cebu — Faulty electrical wiring is being investigated as the possible cause of a fire that displaced 14 families in Sitio Cabanayan, Barangay Bulacao, Talisay City, on Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out shortly after 10 a.m., destroying 10 houses and damaging five others, according to Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas.

Authorities declared the fire under control at 10:14 a.m., and it was fully extinguished by 10:20 a.m.

“Based sa initial report, possible electrical wiring ang maoy hinungdan sa maong sunog. Apan padayon pa ang imbestigasyon aron makumpirma ang eksaktong cause sa insidente,” Gullas said in an advisory posted on his social media page Tuesday afternoon.

(Based on the initial report, faulty electrical wiring may have caused the fire. But the investigation is ongoing to confirm the exact cause of the incident.)

Gullas said the affected families are temporarily staying at the Bulacao Gymnasium.

Shortly after the fire was placed under control, government dispatched workers to distribute sleeping, dining, and hygiene kits, as well as kitchen utensils, to the victims.

Starting Tuesday night, hot meals will also be provided to the displaced families through Wednesday dinner. Additional assistance is also being processed.

Gullas said the city may schedule the distribution of financial assistance next week.

“Nakig-coordinate na usab ta sa office ni Cong. Rhea Gullas for additional support and assistance,” the mayor added.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office will also assist residents who need medicines or wish to avail themselves of free supplies from the city’s partner pharmacies.

“Right now, among pinaka-prayoridad is to make sure nga safe ang tanan, adunay pagkaon, proper assistance, ug maayong pag-atiman while nagpabilin sila sa evacuation area,” Gullas said.

(Right now, our top priority is to ensure everyone is safe, has food, receives proper assistance, and is well taken care of while staying in the evacuation area.)
