Mandaue mayor fires 2 erring employees

Two job order (JO) employees under the Mandaue City Planning Department were immediately terminated after being caught on video playing computer games inside their office during working hours.

Mayor Gabriel Luis “Luigi” Quisumbing yesterday posted on his Facebook account the photos of the two erring employees.

“This is a picture of City Hall employees inside the Planning Office and why they just lost their jobs,” the photo caption reads.

Quisumbing said the photo was sent by a city hall employee to lawyer Elaine Bathan, the city’s chief of staff, before it was forwarded to him yesterday.

Quisumbing, however, refused to divulge their names.

Quisumbing said they also received reports that there were other employees who would go to city hall just to play video games even beyond their duty hours.

When asked whether the termination would undergo due process, Quisumbing replied: “For job order employees, it’s a simpler process. Regular and casual employees should also expect similar action if they were caught violating.”

He added that there was no need to issue a memorandum reminding employees about the policy that prohibits the playing of video games since they were already aware of it.

“We will protect our employees in City Hall, we will reward them for a job well done. But at the same time we will also take actions against those who are not doing what they are supposed to do,” Quisumbing said.

Quisumbing said he will order the Information Technology (IT) personnel to install firewalls to their computer units to prevent city hall employees from playing video games.
