CEBU City’s chief jailer should explain the presence of drugs, cash and assorted contraband items that were uncovered in last Saturday’s raid inside the Cebu City Jail.

“We will ask the city warden (Supt. Johnson Calub) to submit a report or explanation on the presence of those items. It should be addressed to the mayor (Tomas Osmeña) and copy furnished all members of the City Council including the vice mayor. Considering the number of confiscated items, they should submit an explanation,” Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella said.

Over four million pesos in cash and contraband items were uncovered by 300 policemen in a raid on the male dormitories of the Cebu City Jail and the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC).

Labella said while he commended everyone involved in the raids, he was still shocked about the volume of cash, drugs and contraband items found inside the jail.

Labella said he will suggest to Osmeña to reconvene the Police Coordinating and Advisory Council (PCAC) that he chaired so the city government can monitor the city jail.

“The PCAC has not been reconvened for the past five months or so because a lot of us were suspended. These agencies in government could compare notes and discuss matters concerning the peace and order [situation] in the city,” he said.

Asked if he want those officers at the city jail to be relieved, Labella said he wants an explanation first before giving his recommendation.
