ABS-CBN Cebu’s flagship program, TV Patrol Central Visayas, culminated its 28th anniversary celebration for the whole month of August with contests for students at SM Seaside City Cebu last August 31.
The first being Campus Patrol, a live news casting competition designed to prepare the Mass Communication students for work in the media industry.
The activity was in partnership with the Cebu Alliance of Mass Communication Students (CAMMS), an association of Mass Communication students from the different schools in Cebu.
TV Patrol Central Visayas reporter Annie Fe Perez said the competition revealed “how exciting, fun and challenging it is to play the role of a media practitioner.”
The news team from the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) emerged champions.
“The preparation was really tough because most of us are graduating. We spent every night practicing, writing our script and everything for two weeks. So we had to make up for the lost time in school,” said USJR’s anchor Samuel Saberon.
The University of the Philippines Cebu placed second, while St. Theresa’s College (STC) finished third.
The competition was also participated by Cebu Normal University, University of the Visayas, Benedicto College, Cebu Technological University and the University of San Carlos.
Prior to the contest, participants went through a newsroom immersion to enhance their prowess in broadcasting with topics like summary execution, war against drugs, Metro Cebu flooding and other recent social issues that brought the competition into a realistic proportion.
For the special awards, USJR’s Shiela Mae Gumapon and STC’s Adrian Villaganas were declared reporters of the year. STC’s Vance Roa was awarded as News Anchor of the Year.
CCNSHS declared Eco Patrol winners
The second activity was Eco Patrol, an advocacy to protect the environment by encouraging elementary and high school students all over Cebu to recycle waste materials to make them useful and to lessen the waste in local communities.
Entries submitted this year have increased to 61 from last year’s 10.
The Cebu City National Science High School (CCNSHS) won first place for their invention called Salt Lampshade, which was conceptualized during the super typhoon Yolanda when there was not much electricity to light homes at nights. It showed how the salt could produce electricity.
E-Boat or emergency boat made out of plastic softdrink bottles by the pupils of Mayor A.S. Fortuna Elementary School placed second, while Display Set by the Don Carlos Gothong Memorial National High School bagged third place. /CNU MassCom student Je C. Ycong
