Cebu City police ready for Bonifacio Day rallies
More than 70 policemen will be deployed to ensure peace and order during the planned protest rallies in Cebu City today, as the country commemorates Bonifacio Day.
Two protest rallies are set to be conducted today, according to Police Regional Office 7 Information Officer Supt. Reymar Tolentin.
Tolentin said a pro-Duterte rally will be held in Plaza Independencia, while an anti-Duterte rally is set at the Fuente Osmeña Circle.
“These are big rallies so we are not discounting the possibility that there will be chaos during the rallies,” Tolentin said.
He noted that the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) will be deploying at least 73 personnel for the rally in Plaza Indepedencia.
A platoon from the Civil Disturbance Management (CDM) will be keeping an eye on the protest of the members of Bayan Muna – Central Visayas at the Fuente Osmeña Circle.
“We will exercise maximum tolerance for the protesters. So all is set for security preparations for the rallies,” Tolentin said.
Tolentin said Bayan Muna’s protest aims to show resistance to the the possible declaration of the revolutionary government.
The rally in Plaza Independencia, meanwhile, will be staged to urge President Rodrigo Duterte to establish one.
Duterte warned in October that he would declare a revolutionary government if his critics will attempt to destabilize and cause trouble in the country. However, the
President changed his tune last week, denying rumors of plans to form a revolutionary government.
“Gi-prepare gyud nato ang personnel kay duha ka managlahi nga protesta puwede mag-abot (We have prepared our personnel since there will be two opposing rallies),” Tolentin said.
Bayan Muna members will start their protest at the Fuente Osmeña Circle and will march along Colon Street where they will hold a program.
Jaime Paglinawan, Bayan Muna – Central Visayas chairman, said that their rally today is intended to discredit the President’s statements accusing Bayan Muna as supporters of the New People’s Army.
