The Saint Louis College of Cebu (SLCC) Cardinals whipped the Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion-Mandaue (CIC-M) Wild Geese in the championship match to secure their third straight boys’ volleyball crown in the 8th Private Schools Developmental League (PSDL) at the SLCC gymnasium yesterday in Mandaue City.
The Cardinals bucked the absence of their head coach and prevented an upset at their own turf by beating an equally determined Wild Geese squad in three sets, 25-22, 17-25, 25-16.
“The secret to our success is that we consider each and everyone of us in the team as family. There’s a unity between the players and the coaches. It’s just like what we inculcate here in SLCC—family first,” said Cardinals assistant coach Rose Eden Dumayas. “These players are also hardworking because they practice every afternoon right after their classes. That’s why there’s no reason they can’t win.”
The team’s head coach Juvilito Veliganio had to skip the championship game to attend to personal matters.
After squeaking past the Wild Geese in the first set, the defending champion Cardinals encountered a bit of resistance in the second, losing by eight points to be forced into a deciding third set.
But the perennial champions recovered by getting off to a hot start in the third set and never looked back en route to the championship win.
Meanwhile, Saint Joseph Academy of Mandaue City swept the Indiana Aerospace University (IAU), 25-18, 25-22, to settle for third place.
The battle continues on Saturday for the girls’ volleyball tournament to be held at the Philippine Christian Gospel School in Cebu City.
The tournament will start at 8 a.m. and will end around 5 p.m.
