THE DIVINE Life Institute of Cebu (DLIC) may have lost to Academia del Christifidelis (AdC), 50-48, in their Private Schools Developmental League (PSDL) 18-Under Basketball game at the Cebu Cherish School Inc. (CCSI) gym last Saturday but it still emerged victorious because of an infraction by its opponents.
The DLIC hoopsters managed to take home the win after the AdC’s coaching staff violated PSDL’s house rules about coaches’ dress code. PSDL rules state that coaches should wear collared upper garments or shirts with a printed name of the team they represent.
A failure to comply would award opponents an automatic 10 points.
Since AdC wasn’t able to follow the dress code, the league awarded DLIC 10 more points to change the final score to 58-50 in favor of the Liloan school.
DLIC, thus, remained unbeaten with a 6-0 (win-loss) record.
Godfrey Sabanal topped DLIC with 19 points. Jordan Camahalan topscored for AdC with 22 points.
DLIC head coach Edsel Say Valcena said he was already aware with the additional points but decided to keep it from the team.
“I kept it as a secret from the team so their mindset of winning the game [will remain],” he added.
The win was a big one for DLIC, which was missing defensive player Daniel Puasa. Puasa was suspended for one game after receiving two technical fouls in the team’s last game on October 6.
Although Puasa will be returning in the team’s next game, Valcena reminded his team not to be over confident.
In the other 18-Under games, La Consolacion College (LCC) defeated Springdale, 49-48, while Centre for International Education (CIE) won against St. Joseph’s Academy, 42-23.
