THE Cebu-Private Schools Athletic Association (Cebu-PRISAA) ended yesterday’s 2014 PRISAA regional meet with a bang as the Cebuano athletes added 37 gold medals to bring its total tally to a resounding 144 gold medals and formally claim the championship title.
Cebu-Prisaa, which netted 107 golds on opening day, secured its additional golds from athletics, football, karatedo, men’s beach volleyball, song solo and fuet competitions and from the Mutya ng Prisaa beauty pageant.
Bohol-Prisaa, on the other hand, garnered just a single gold coming from athletics, while Dumaguete-Prisaa, which competed for the first time in yesterday’s event, netted four golds, all coming from karatedo.
11 golds from men’s football
The men’s football team of Cebu-Prisaa doled out 11 gilts to the Cebuanos’ cause after repeating over Bohol-Prisaa in their second encounter in the two-day competition as the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars-powered Cebu team trampled the hapless Boholanos, 12-1.
The powerhouse Cebu-Prisaa track and field team also dished out a strong performance in the final day as it harvested majority of the gilts with University of Saouthern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) Panthers’ Khenly Parcon winning another gold medal in the men’s 100-meter with a time of 10.99 seconds.
University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters’ Prince Joy Lee also gave Cebu-Prisaa a gold in men’s 5,000-meter run after he finished the race in 16 minutes and 13.10 seconds, while his teammate, Jelena Joy Dagatan, won the gold medal in women’s Javelin throw after lobbing the spear to a distance of 30.42 meters.
The other athletics gold medals of Cebu-Prisaa came from Romeo Omnos (men’s javelin throw), Kimberly Ygot (women’s 100m), the men’s and women’s 4x100m teams and the men‘s and women’s 4×400 relay teams.

Cebu-Prisaa’s men’s beach volleyball team, represented by USP-F’s Edmar Bonono and University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers Mark Anthony Fernandez and Joseph Noval, also netted three gold medals after they recovered from a loss in Game 2 in defeating Bohol-Prisaa in the third and final game. Cebu-Prisaa took the opening game at 21-14 and 21-19 but the Boholanos bounced back in the next game as the latter recovered from an opening set slump to bash the Cebuanos, 13-21, 21-19 and 21-15, to forge a rubbermatch. Cebu-Prisaa kept its composure down the stretch, shoving out Bohol with a 21-16, 21-15 Game 3 victory.
karatedo
In karatedo, winning the gold medals for Cebu are UC’s Ann Marie Dela Riarte (women’s individual kata), Vince Harvey Cabrera (men’s individual kata) and the men’s and women’s kumite teams.
The women’s individual kumite gold medal winners for Cebu-Prisaa are Gwen Jade Ponteros (below 50Kgs), Lynie Narboada (-55kgs), Marjorie Villareal (-61kgs) and Mary Mathilde Auza (+68kgs).
Kelvin Suan aso contributed a gold to Cebu in the men’s individual kumite’s below 60kgs division, while Bohol’s lone gold in the event came from Jonah Nuey in the men’s individual kumite’s below -68kg.
Dumaguete-Prisaa’s four karatedo gold medals are courtesy of Seth Lingho (men’s -50kg.), Marvin Sarona (67kg.), Adam Rell Radoc (75 kg.) and Antonio Bacud (+68kg.).
UC’s Genevieve Flores won the gold in the solo singing competition, while her teammates, Ma Flora Mahusay and Reymar Nacion snared two gold medals after winning the duet competition.
The final gilt of the day came from Ingrid Gerodias of University of San Carlos-Main, who was crowned 2014 Mutya ng Prisaa.
