Camarines Soaring Eagles end Cordova Dagami Warriors’ win streak, take No. 1 spot in Wesley So Cup

Camarines Soaring Eagles beat Dagami Warriors on Saturday, June 5.

CEBU CITY, Philippines—- The Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors’ unbeaten streak was snapped by the Camarines Soaring Eagles in the resumption of the Wesley So Cup Conference of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) last Saturday evening, June 5, 2021. 

The Dutchess Dagami Warriors were on a nine-game winning streak since the competition started on May 15, but things went sideways when they faced the equally-determined Soaring Eagles, who beat them,8.5-12.5 in their first match. 

The Camarines Soaring Eagles scored 4.5 points over the Dagami Warriors’ 2.5 in the blitz round. They sealed the rapid competition with an 8-6 victory to tie the Dagami Warriors with ten wins and a single defeat. 

Their victory over the Dagami Warriors earned them more points to take the No. 1 spot in the south divisions. They have 157 accumulated points compared to the Dagami Warriors’ 151.

Cordova’s import, Grand Master (GM) Nitzan Steinberg, had an even match with the Soaring Eagles’ Mark Paragua. GM Steinberg of Israel won the blitz round but lost to Paragua in the rapid competition. 

Meanwhile, the Toledo Trojans emerged as the better Cebu-based team after beating the Lapu-Lapu Naki Warriors,11.5-9.5, in the all-Cebu team showdown in the first round of the games yesterday. 

The Trojans lost against the Iloilo Kisela Knights in their second match, 2.5-18.5, while the Naki Warriors narrowly edged the Palawan Queen’s Gambit,11-10. 

The Trojans are seated at fourth place with an 8-3 (win-loss) record. They tied the Kisela Knights with their record, but the latter led with a wide margin in the total accumulated points with 163. The Trojans have 122.5 to trail the Kisela Knights in the standings.

The Kisela Knights, the inaugural conference’s third overall placer, manhandled the Cebu City Machers,15-6 before they beat the Trojans in the second round. 

The Machers also lost to the Soaring Eagles,6.5-14.5, to place ninth in the team standings with a 3-8 win-loss record in their second match.

On the other hand, the Naki Warriors is at seventh place with 5-6 win-loss card from their 127 accumulated points.
