Davide backs Robredo’s presidential bid

Incumbent Cebu Vice Governor Hilario Davide III files his COC on October 7, 2021, together with former Tourism Secretary Ace Durano. Durano will be running for governor of Cebu in the May 2022 elections.

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Cebu Vice Gov. Hilario Davide III will be endorsing Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo’s bid to be the country’s next president.

This despite being in tandem with former Tourism Sec. Ace Durano who is running for governor. Durano of Bakud and Partido Pilipino sa Pagbabago (PPP) has endorsed Davao City Sara Duterte – Carpio as his possible Presidential bet.

“Nagsabot nami ana (ni Ace)… And yes, si Vice President Leni akong supportaan,” Davide told reporters in a press conference on Thursday, October 7.

Davide will be seeking reelection as vice governor under the Liberal Party (LP) while Durano will be facing incumbent Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.

Davide is also the lone aspirant running under LP’s banner in Cebu province.

In Cebu City, former Interior and Local Government Usec. Francisco ‘Bimbo’ Fernandez submitted his bid for the city’s vice mayoralty post under LP.

Robredo on Thursday announced that she will be running as President in next year’s elections, ending months of speculation about whether she would run for president, pursue a local post, or retire from politics.

This also meant that Robredo is now accepting the nomination of opposition coalition 1Sambayan to be its standard-bearer for the upcoming polls.

Robredo was pushing for a united opposition slate for the 2022 national elections, hence the late decision to enter the presidential race.

Prior to the filing of certificates of candidacy, she sat down and talked with other possible candidates including Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Senators Panfilo Lacson, and Senator Manny Pacquiao.

But it appears that the talks have failed as all have expressed their intent to run for the presidency, with all three having already filed their own COCs. / with reports from INQUIRER.net
