New champions emerge in Cepca weekly online chess

CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) welcomed a new set of champions in their weekly online chess tournament dubbed as the “Barracks Chess Club Blitz Series 2” held last Sunday, October 31, 2021.

Antonio Cabibil and Magno Dionson Jr dominated their respective categories to emerge this week’s best performers in the online chess tournament.

The 54-year old Cabibil, a consistent podium placer in the weekly tournament finally brushed aside the bridesmaid tag after ruling the All-Cepcans category with 8.0 points in nine rounds of action under the Swiss system format.

Cabibil, a former Southwestern University-Phinma varsity woodpusher and ex-Cebu Chess King champion bested former weekly champion Norman Jasper Montejo who settled for second place with 6.0 points.

Another former weekly champion Rosendo Yamyamin clinched third place also with 6.0 points but with lower tiebreak points.

National Master (NM) Rogelio Enriquez Jr., Eladio Lim III, and Edwin Cablao settled for fourth to sixth places, respectively by scoring 5.5 points each and were ranked according to their total tie-break points.

On the other hand, Dionson Jr., a 54-year old geodetic engineer from Mandaue City scored 30 points to top the Group B competition.

Edwin Cablao placed second with 27 points while Filemon Kapuno III rounded off the top three with 26 points. Reynaldo Flores landed in fourth place with 25 points while Leo Lofranco settled in fifth place with 18 points.   /rcg
