CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Bureau of Fire Protection in Central Visayas (BFP-7) urged the public to be preventive and not just responsive amid the successive fire incidents in Cebu in the past week.
Chief Insp. Raul Bustalino, chief of the Regional Operations Division of the BFP-7, said that the BFP-7 was also worried of the successive fire incidents in Cebu in just a span of days.
He then asked the public to be extra-careful in dealing with anything that could be a cause of accidental fire incidents, which could cause an economic toll through property losses and worse, death.
“Medyo na-noted g’yod namo nga in a span of how many days nagsubsob ang mga ni transpire nga ga fire incidents…Magbinantayon g’yod ta sa pag mitigate ug pag-prevent aning sunog kay mao lagi na nga bisan pa og aware na ta, ang element of negligence and carelessness usahay jud di nato kapangantihan,” he said.
(We noted that in a span of how many days successive fire incidents happened…We should be vigilant to mitigate and prevent fires because that is the reason that even if we are aware, the element of negligence and carelessness sometimes could not be prevented.)
In just a week, or from May 26 to June 2, 2022, at least four separate fire incidents have been reported in Cebu.
Two separate fire incidents happened last May 26 involving a warehouse in Barangay Tabok, Mandaue City and another in Barangay Labogon of the same City.
On Thursday night, June 2, firefighters also responded to a residential fire in Victor Village in Barangay Punta Princesa in Cebu City; the said fire incident engulfed two adjacent houses. Just about two hours after, or at around 8 p.m. a huge fire broke out in Danao City Public Market which took hours to be put out.
Bustalino emphasized the importance of conducting regular maintenance to help prevent electrical fires at home and in establishments.
“Ang regular maintenance dapat sa mga establishments especially if naay mga power interruption. Bantayan sad ang mga electric fans and ceiling fans nga dili mag overheat,” he said.

He also reminded the public of the dangers and risk posed by using LPG-refilled butane canisters.
Bustalino said the BFP-7 was implementing the Oplan Ligtas Pamayanan where firefighters would conduct routine fire truck visibility on the roads aside from scheduled exposure in barangay levels and trainings for fire volunteers to increase awareness on fire safety.
