MANDAUE CITY, Philippines — Some 141 Barangay Health and Nutrition Workers (BHNW) got a “refresher course” in their roles in the Mandaue City’s nutrition program.
This was after the Mandaue City Health Office (MCHO) held a two-day nutrition month forum for BHNWs on Thursday, July 14, 2022.
Josephine Aniñon, CHO’s nutrition officer IV, said that the activity was conducted to refresh BHNWs in their roles in the city’s nutrition programs.
Aniñon said BHNWs were very important in the city’s nutrition campaign as they were the frontliners visiting houses, and finding malnourished children in the barangays among others.
The nutrition forum will last on Friday, July 15.
The MCHO also conducted an agricultural fair and free medical service last week for the kick-off of the city’s nutrition month celebration.
Aniñon said one of their main priorities would be to improve the health of all stunted and malnourished children in the city.
The CHO conducts operation timbang” for children 0 to 59 months during every first quarter of the year.
Aniñon said that they had also launched the dietary supplementation program, feeding wasted children of nutritious foods for 120 days.
She said that they would also be launching their 120-day milk feeding program soon which would probably happen next month.
The dietary supplementation program is for children aged 6 months to 23 months while the milk feeding would be for those stunted children aged 2 to 5 years old, said Aniñon.
Ann Catherine Songahid, a BHNW in barangay Maguikay said that based on her observations, the problem was not just because of poverty but also how parents would monitor and take care of their children.
“Makapakaon man, ang problema ang ila’ng pag-atiman,” said Songahid.
(They can feed their children but the problem is the way they take care of their children.)
