Toledo City Trojans start PCAP playoffs campaign Wednesday

CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Toledo City Trojans are locked and loaded for the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) southern division playoffs that kick off tomorrow, Wednesday, July 27, 2022.

Compared to the previous conference, the Trojans have a better seeding this time at No. 4.

In the previous conference, they qualified at the No. 6 spot and were eliminated in the semifinals by the Davao Chess Eagles.

This time, they take on the No. 5 team, the Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates in the playoffs.

The Trojans will field in Chinese Grand Master (GM) Xu Yi, International Master (IM) Rico Mascariñas, National Master (NM) Merben Roque, NM Rogelio Enriquez Jr., Christopher Tubalado, Jinky Catulay, Bon Rainauld Tibod, Rafael Perez, and Rommel Ganzon

The playoff cast of the tournament was completed last Saturday after the play-in.

This as the Tacloban Vikings and the Camarines-Iriga Soaring Eagles qualified for the No. 8 and No. 7 spots after beating their respective opponents.

In the playoffs, No. 8 Tacloban will face top seed Iloilo Kisela Knights while Camarines Iriga will meet the No. 2 team, Negros Kingsmen.

The other playoff pairing features the No.3 team Davao Chess Eagles versus No. 6 Zamboanga Sultans.

Meanwhile, the reigning champions, San Juan Predators which is currently the No. 3 team in the northern division take on the Cagayan Kings (6).

Northern division’s top team, the Pasig City King Pirates battle Rizal Batch Towers, Caloocan Load Mana Knights (2) meet Quezon City Simba’s Tribe (7), and former champions, Laguna Heroes (4) square off with the Manila Indios (5).     /rcg
