CEBU CITY, Philippines – Dumanjug Mayor Efren ‘Gungun’ Gica clarified that there are no incidents of abduction, kidnapping, and other related crimes that took place in their locality.

Gica made this statement on his personal Facebook page on Wednesday, August 24. He was referring to an earlier report published by CDN Digital.

“No reports of kidnapping in our town!” Gica stated.

CDN Digital has reached out to Mayor Gica for comments but he has not responded as of this posting.

In an earlier report, CDN Digital published a story citing a statement from the municipal government’s Public Information Office (PIO) that warns students to be wary of strangers persistently offering free rides.

The statement came at a time when unverified and unofficial reports of abduction and kidnapping went rampant on social media.

The report, however, did not explicitly state that such crimes happened in Dumanjug, a third-class municipality located 79 kilometers southwest of Cebu City.

Police in Cebu assured the public that there are no reported and verified kidnapping and attempted kidnapping incidents not only in the island province but also in the entire Visayas region.

The Anti-Kidnapping Group Visayas Field Unit earlier said that posts alleging kidnapping and attempted kidnapping in Cebu circulating on social media recently were the same ones previously shared in the past years.
