Compulsory employment of elderly opposed
The Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) is supporting a proposed ordinance requiring business establishments in Cebu City to employ at least 10 percent of their workforce from the ranks of the senior citizens. According to Doming Chavez, head of the OSCA many senior citizens can still be productive and still want to work even after they retire.
But representatives of the business sector who attended the public hearing on the proposed ordinance authored by Councilor Gerry Carillo said the ordinance may not be tenable as it may contravene regulations on retirement.
“Senior citizens cannot work well since they already exceeded the retirement age of 60 to 65”, said Gina Roa administration assistant of the Hotel Resort and Restaurant Association of Cebu, Inc.
Chavez said retirees can be employed part-time.
After the public hearing, Carillo was quoted by ABS-CBN News that they may consider the suggestion to make the employment of retirees by private business only as a recommendation and not compulsory.
