A 10-YEAR-OLD boy was killed after a garbage truck ran over him in barangay Umapad, Mandaue yesterday morning.

Police said the victim and another boy climbed aboard the truck but slipped while stepping on the fuel tank.

The boy fell to the road and was pinned down by the truck’s rear tire, said PO3 Melvin Leones.

The barangay-owned truck with plate number SKL-180 was driven by Rolando Maning, 47, a resident of Barangay Ibabao-Estancia, Mandaue.

Maning surrendered to the police after the incident.

Also aboard were truck helpers Rolando Ople, 38; Arnel Requiso, 26; and Leonito Requiso, 40.

Ople said the two boys would usually climb on board the truck when they are in the area to collect garbage.

“We just ignore them because they usually climb the truck despite our repeated reprimands,” said Ople in Cebuano.

Ibabao-Estancia barangay captain Carmelino Del Mar said that because of the incident, he will suggest to the Solid Waste Management Office to deploy personnel in the area to prevent scavengers from climbing on board the truck while garbage truck drivers will also be briefed to prevent similar accidents from happening again.
