CEBU CITY, Philippines — A vehicular accident that happened on Saturday afternoon, September 16, claimed the life of an elderly man as it also injured two others.

The accident happened at the national highway in Barangay Bonbon, Samboan town in southern Cebu at around 12:45 p.m.

According to the police report, the motorcycle that was driven by Charito Verdido Rodriguez, 41, rammed into a passenger bus that was traveling on the side of the highway.

The impact caused Charito and his backriders, his parents Dominador, 74, and Victoria, 64, to fall from the motorcycle.

According to Police Staff Sergeant Serge Hiramis, desk officer of the Samboan Police Station, all of the three victims sustained injuries on their head, hands, and feet and were brought to the Malabuyoc District Hospital.

Dominador was already dead when he was brought to the hospital.

Motorcycle made a sudden right turn

Hiramis said that Charito and his parents left their home in Barangay Monteverde and were traveling to Barangay Poblacion when the accident happened.

According to the police report, Charito allegedly made a sudden right turn while traversing a downhill which caused him to lose control of his motorcycle.

Quoting accounts by witnesses, Charito’s motorcycle encroached the other lane of the national highway, which caused his motorcycle to hit an approaching bus.

The impact caused Charito and his parents to fall from the motorcycle and land on the concrete road.

Bud driver, passengers unharmed

Luckily, the driver of the passenger bus and his passengers were unharmed during the accident.

The bus that was driven by Arnel Ampoon Sanchez, a 25-year-old resident of Barangay Manlum in Oslob town, came from Cebu City and was bound for Barangay Sebastian in Samboan town via the Barili road.

Hiramis said that they now have custody of Sanchez. He visited the police station shortly after the accident happened to voluntarily surrender.

Charito, who was already discharged from the hospital, has also visited the police station to meet with Sanchez. On the other hand, his mother, Victoria, remains confined for further observation.

Hiramis said that as of this writing, both parties continue to talk. / dcb
