CEBU CITY, Philippines — Two of the defending champions of the Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (SHAABAA) put on dominating performances on Sunday, October 1, 2023, to book tickets to the much-anticipated finals, at the Magis Eagles Arena in Mandaue City.
The Division B defending champions, the Cebu Landmasters-Batch 2003, swept their best-of-three semifinals series against Puresteel Manufacturing Corporation-Batch 2011, 92-75, to clinch their finals berth.
Also, Division C defending champions, the Heritage Supreme Land Developer-Batch 2012, eliminated Harley Davidson-Batch 2014, 95-56, in game three of their own best-of-three semis series to climb to Division C’s finals.
TAN, ROGADO LEAD BATCH 2003
Daryle Tan exploded for a huge double-double game of 37 points with 20 rebounds, and eight assists to lead Batch 2003’s finals-clinching win over Batch 2011.
His teammate Barnett Moncrief Rogado had a rare triple-double of 11 points with 18 boards, 11 assists, and one steal, while Justin Ross Huang also had a double-double game of 11 points, 12 rebounds, and two assists. Jan Michael Jaca and Carlos Cecil Alerta combined for 23 points for Batch 2003.
Kiefer Lim, Bernard Chioson, and Lance Co scored 25, 18, and 12 points, respectively as Batch 2011 exited the league.
Batch 2003 will face the Efficascent Boost-BRC-Batch 2010 who also swept their best-of-three semis duel with ’04 For the Win-Batch 2004, 65-56.
Gabe Branzuela dropped 25 points, while Jasper Diaz unloaded a double-double outing of 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Joseph Zozobrado contributed 10 markers.
Batch 2004’s Ervin Lopena had 14 points and 11 boards in their losing efforts.
BATCH 2012, 2013 FORGE FINALS DUEL
On the other hand, Aaron Baldwin Sing, Andre Pacheco, and Adven Jess Diputado unloaded 24, 14, and 13 points apiece in their do-or-die game-three win over Batch 2014.
Noriko Benedicto paced Batch 2014 with 17 points, while Jan Frederick Quinanola and Andrew Vincent Manaloto each had double-double games in Batch 2014’s losing efforts.
Quinanola registered 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Manaloto had 10 points and 11 boards.
Batch 2012 will face Nest Workspaces-Batch 2013 in the Division C finals after the latter also blanked Batch 2021, 2-0, in their best-of-three semis series.
Batch 2013 sealed their semis series over Batch 2021 on Sunday with a, 91-60, victory behind Manu Jordana Fernando’s double-double performance of 21 points and 13 rebounds. Rendell Senining, Emman Malazarte, and Arc Gabriel Araw-Araw scored 15, 11, and 10 points, respectively, for Batch 2013.
Rey Marcus Fuentes spoiled his 31-point double-double game for Batch 2021. Fuentes also tallied 11 rebounds and two assists in their defeat.
BATCH 2000 FORCES GAME 3
Division A defending champion, Core Pacific Money Exchange-Batch 2000, stayed alive after tying their semifinals series, 1-1, against Batch Bayfront Hotel-Batch 1990/1997. They won game 2 on Sunday, 57-41, forcing a do-or-die game 3 on October 8.
Sergs Al Go Bui had a double-double game of 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Johannes Chua scored 18 for Batch 2000. Mark Sy was the lone double-digit Batch 1990/1997 scorer with 13 markers.
Also having a deciding game three on October 8 is ARQ-Batch 2001. They beat Speed Demon Vivant-Batch 1994/1995/1996, 59-45, behind Mark Hing’s double-double of 16 points and 12 boards. Carlo Villarica chipped in 12 markers in Batch 2001’s huge win.
Junie Alejandro and Paulsen Uy each scored 11 points for the losing squad.
