LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – An official of the City Engineering Office (CEO) has ordered the demolition of the canopy at the parking area of the Lapu-Lapu City Hall after the structure collapsed as a result of the heavy downpour that was experienced Wednesday night, October 11, 2023.
Engr. Perla Amar, the CEO head, said that the project contractor, Florian Construction, will have to redo the work at their own expense.
Amar said that Florian Construction will also have to discuss with the owner of a vehicle that was damaged after the canopy collapsed.
One of the seven vehicles that were parked in the area was damaged, Amar said.
The installation of the City Hall parking area canopy and a pedestrian lane project was awarded to Florian Construction. Actual work started in August 2022 and is still ongoing.
Prior to the heavy downpour Wednesday night, Amar said that she already raised some concerns to the project contractor for possible “corrections.”
She said that the canopy’s posts were too small and it had leaks.
“For several time, amo na siyang gi-inform nga i-correct ang trabaho kay nabantayan nako nga murag niduko ang mao nga structure ba. So naturally kung naay heavy downpour, mo-accumulate gyud ang tubig sa atubangan sa dapit sa atop,” Amar said.
Meanwhile, Amar clarified that the city does not own the vehicles that were covered by the collapsed parking area canopy.
These were owned by people who live at the back and beside the City Hall building, who would take advantage of the city’s empty parking area at night.
“Wa ta ni-allow og parking gyud ana sa area. Tag-iya ana, sa mga kabalayan didto sa luyo, sa kilid sa city hall. Naa sila diha nigamit sa parking ma-gabie,” she added. / dcb
