Electrocution: Woman killed by Christmas lights in Dapitan City

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur — A 24-year-old woman died of electrocution on Friday evening while visiting the Christmas-themed plaza in Dapitan City in Zamboanga del Norte province.

Lieutenant Colonel Romar Victoriano Lim, Dapitan City police chief, said that at about 7:30 p.m., ‘Carmi,’ a resident of  Silawe village in Polanco town, with her 5-year-old niece, was roaming around the plaza to witness the Christmas lights on display.

While sitting on a stainless steel railing, she accidentally fell into the garden light and was electrocuted.

Local responders rushed the unconscious victim to the Dr. Jose Rizal Memorial Hospital for medical attention but the attending physician declared her dead on arrival.

In a statement, the Dapitan City local government said the electrocution was an “isolated incident” and was “tragic.”

“We understand this incident has caused profound shock and concern within our community. We want to assure everyone that the City Government of Dapitan is taking this matter extremely seriously,” the local government said.

“We have immediately launched a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and to ensure it never happens again. We are working closely with the authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation and identify any potential safety issues,” the statement added.

The Dapitan City government was in close contact with the family of the victim of electrocution and committed to provide them all the necessary support and assistance.
