In line with its goal of adopting dragonboat racing as an alternative sports development program, the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) will be staging the first-ever Dragonboat Racing in the island of Cebu this May 23 in Bogo City, northern Cebu.
This was announced yesterday by members of the CPSC headed by Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba in a press conference at the Legislative Building of the Cebu Provincial Capitol.
CPSC member and Provincial Board Member Celestino A. Martinez III, vice chairman of the Committee on Budget and Appropriation, said that prior to the planned dragonboat competition, the CPSC needs to purchase first two units of 10-seater dragonboats, which will be used for the training of the CPSC’s dragonboat team. Each unit costs P150,000 each.
Members of the team, though, are yet to be identified by the CPSC.
Martinez, who is from Bogo City, said they are planning to invite other dragonboat teams from around the country to take part in the first staging of this kind of race in Cebu.
Martinez said that if all goes on as planned, the CPSC is aiming to conduct future dragonboat races in the different municipalities and component cities of the province .
