CEBU CITY, Philippines – For the first time in recent history, the local governments in Cebu ordered  face-to-face class suspensions due to the extreme heat.

As of 3 p.m., April 4, the following localities allowed schools in elementary and high school, at all levels, to do pandemic-era blended learning to protect both learners and teachers from the adverse impact of unbearable heat.

These are the areas in Cebu where class suspensions were ordered:

Tabogon

Asturias

Ronda

Sibonga

Tuburan

Medellin

Balamban

Tabuelan

Badian

San Fernando

Toledo City

Talisay City

Minglanilla

Lapu-Lapu City

Naga City

Liloan

Cordova

Consolacion

Meanwhile, Mandaue City implemented blended learning, partial face-to-face classes, and modular distance learning. This was in line with the recommendation during the consultative meeting of the local school board on Wednesday.

Students are divided into Set A and Set B. Each set will attend face-to-face classes for two days a week from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., then modular for another two days. Students having a hard time in classes need to attend face-to-face classes on Fridays.

Private schools may implement blended at discretion of their school head or administrator.

In the past few weeks, heat index levels in Cebu have reached dangerous levels, in which temperatures over 33 degrees Celsius can potentially lead to heat exhaustion and even fatal ones like heat stroke.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has since allowed schools to resort to other modes of learning, aside from face-to-face, due to the hot and humid weather. / with reports from Niña Mae Oliverio
