By: AP June 15,2015 - 11:35 AM

THE Department of Education (DepEd) is encouraging teachers to vie for the 2016 Global Teacher Prize, considered the Nobel Prize for teachers.

In a memorandum issued on June 5, DepEd Cebu Schools Division Superintendent Arden D. Monisit encouraged the immediate dissemination of the details of the annual search as contained in a directive issued earlier by Education Secretary Armin A. Luistro.

The award comes with a $1-million prize. It will be given to “one exceptional teacher who has deeply inspired learners and has made a positive impact in the community.”

The search is open to all teachers around the world who are teaching youth aged 5 – 18 years old, part-time and online courses.

Teachers may apply online by accomplishing an application form posted on www.globalteacherprize.org. The public may also nominate a teacher, who will be notified about the nomination by e-mail and requested to apply online on the same website.

Nominations may be filed online until October 10 this year. The winner will be announced at the Global Education and Skills Forum in Dubai in March next year.

The Global Teacher Prize is given by the Varkey Foundation. This year’s winner was Nancie Atwell from the US.

Details of the award may also be found at TeacherPrize in Facebook and Twitter.
