A graduate of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) is the lone Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) awardee from Cebu and the Visayas.

Adriel Gamier Sanchez, who hails from barangay Mambaling, Cebu City, received the award last Friday at the Heroes’ Hall in Malacañang. The ceremoney was attended by Cabinet Secretary Rene Almendras, a Cebuano.

“I did not expect to be among the awardees since there were 30 other individuals judged for TOSP,” Sanchez  told Cebu Daily News.

TOSP awardees are chosen for their academic leadership and social responsibility.

The 21-year-old TOSP recipient finished a degree of  Bachelor of Science (BS) in Industrial Engineering (IE) at USJ-R and graduated as summa cum laude last March 2015 with an average grade of 1.15.

An academic scholar of USJ-R and the Visayan Electric Co., Inc. (Veco), Sanchez was also active in school organizations.

He was the former vice president of  Josenian Industrial Technocrats Society (Joints) at USJ-R.

According to the USJ-R website, he also received the  Outstanding Cebu City Youth Leader Award (2015), Outstanding UNESCO Club Youth Leader of the Philippines Award (2014), and Frederick Taylor Leadership Award (2014).

He spearheaded the collection of donated books and distribution of school supplies and books together with the Mathematical Society in barangay Ermita.

Other collected books were also given to the Ermita Public Library.

Three years ago, he led the “Pan Lambo Bakeshop” in barangay Cambinocot that benefited 200 families.

Sanchez said the project started when they won P200,000 during the first Aboitiz Corporate Social Responsibility conference.

At present, the bakeshop is being operated by the barangay’s cooperative which also provides a feeding program to at least 20 children.

“Among my advocacies is a sustainable livelihood program. I realized that this has been my passion and advocacy in life,” he said.

Sanchez now works as an industrial engineer for TMX Philippines Inc. at the Mactan Economic Zone in Lapu-Lapu City.
