After a long break, school-based football teams in Cebu return to action as 92 teams compete in this weekend’s first-ever Univille 7-a-side Football Festival at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) football pitch.
The tournament, organized by sportsman Gerry Guardo, aims to give more exposure for grassroots teams in Cebu.
“There’s a long lull of tournament here in Cebu and we want to have a continuation so that the kids will have more exposure in the field. We are happy to say that this tournament will be part of Cebu Football Association’s (CFA) calendar of tournaments,” said tournament director Dino Musni.
Cebu had its last major football tournament in May that featured the 17th Aboitiz Football Cup.
The upcoming tournament, supported by Univille Homes, will have 10 age-group divisions namely: under-seven, under-nine, under-11, under-13, under-15 boys and girls and the under 18 boys and girls.
The boys under-15 division drew the most number of participating teams with 17 followed by under-11 age group and boys under-18 with 16 each.
The boys under-15 category attracted 15 teams.
The Girls Under-18 division has nine, under-nine age class has seven and girls under-15 and under-7 both have six competing squads.
The under-seven, under-nine, under-11 and under-13 divisions will be played on Saturday, while games in the remaining divisions will be held the following day.
Games will start at 7:30 a.m.
