THE Foton Tornadoes shocked powerhouse Cignal, 25-17, 25-19, 25-18, in the 2015 Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at The Arena in San Juan.
Banking on their well-balanced assault, the Tornadoes were impressive from start to finish to clinch their third win in six games in this inter-club tourney.
Imports Katie Messing, Lindsay Stalzer and Filipino-American Kayla Williams delivered 13 points apiece while Jaja Santiago finished with eight hits while providing solid net defense that made it difficult for Cignal’s prolific import Ariel Usher to penetrate.
Usher notched 22 kills and a block to finish with 23 points for Cignal, which suffered back to back setbacks after sweeping the first round.
She, however, failed to draw enough support from the locals as the backline defense of the HD Spikers was non-existent during the match witnessed by another huge weekday crowd. The HD Spikers fell to 5-2 good for second spot as the league enters a long Halloween break.
