From masters to millennials—SM Supermalls around the Philippines are paying homage to local visual artists in its “My City, My SM, My Art” roadshow.

In partnership with  Centerstage Productions, Metropolitan Museum of Manila, National Commission of Culture and the Arts and the Shell Companies  of the Philippines, the roadshow brings artists and art lovers of all ages together in appreciation of local  cultural craftsmanship.

The Cebu leg featured Cebuano artists from multiple artistic disciplines —painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and filmmaking—Romulo Galicano, Denis Montera, Wyndelle Vermonde, Kidlat, Lhee Isabel Taneo and Anton Quisumbing, and members of the  Cebu Images Cameras Club.

During the exhibit’s opening in SM Seaside City Cebu, all the artists were presented with a handcrafted nautilus shell, which is the design inspiration for SM Seaside City.

“Art had been and will always be an expression of my experiences and insights of the things happening around me,” Galicano said. “No matter how trivial and desolate, a moment has formed and affected us one way or another.”

Meanwhile, Taneo, a budding artist from Olango Island, uses small seashells to create art that depict day-to-day activities of islanders. “I used my fellow islanders as subject of my works,” she said.

There is also Wyndelle Vermonde, whose works are described as “pop graphical” or realism and pop art combined with technology.

The exhibit, held at the ground floor of SM Seaside City’s Mountain Wing Atrium, ran from March 16 to 23.

“My City, My SM, My Art” is an offshoot of the tourism-oriented “My City, My SM” campaign created in 2009 that promoted the SM malls alongside their respective host cities. It has since then expanded to “My City, My Sm, My Cuisine,” which highlighted the various gastronomic delights of each city and region, and then to “My City, My SM, My Art.”
