A truck driver and his helper died after their delivery truck lost its brakes and plunged into a creek along the national highway of Tan-awan, Oslob town located 117 kms south of Cebu City at past 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Truck driver Rene dela Cruz, a 39-year-old resident of barangay Carreta, Cebu City and 29-year-old truckboy Ronnel Campaña, of Capitol Site, Cebu City, died of severe head injuries as a result of the crash.
PO2 Noel Mamale of the Oslob police precinct said the two men were pronounced dead on arrival in Oslob Disrict Hospital.
Dela Cruz drove the company Fuso delivery truck bearing plate number GNP 296 owned by Gemina Legion Distribution Corp. of San Roque, Cebu City heading to Santander to deliver laundry soaps when the accident occured.
Mamale said dela Cruz was driving the truck fast as he tried to make his way in a downhill road when the truck’s brakes malfunctioned, causing it to hit a motorcycle before it plunged into creek, about 12 feet below the road.
The crash badly damaged the truck and rescuers had to use heavy duty vehicles to pull the two victims out of the truck’s front seats. The hour-long rescue effort managed to extract the victims out of the truck.
But the victims failed to make it due to the severity of their head injuries. The 21-year-old motorcycle driver identified as Micky Berongan, 21, a resident of the area, sustained minor injuries.
