CEBUANA beach volleyball queen Danika Gendrauli hit it off with new partner Aby Marano and defeated Petron Sprint 4T in dominant fashion, 21-7, 21-16, in the Philippine SuperLiga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup over the weekend at the Sands SM By The Bay.
Gendrauli, one-half of the defending champions in last year’s tournament when she was paired with Norie Diaz, had no problem gelling with Marano, the former La Salle ace, to take care of the Petron tandem of Maica Morada and Ces Molina in spite having only a week to prepare for the tournament.
“I just told Aby (Marano) not to mind last year’s title. This is another tournament. That was last year. I just told her to play her game and not to feel any pressure at all,” said Gendrauli.
Meanwhile, Gendrauli was not the only Cebuana to do well in the competition as recently-crowned Nestea Beach Volley titleholder Cherry Rondina connived with Patty Orendain to win two straight games. They first snatched an easy 21-3, 21-7 win over Accel Quantum Plus’ Aileen Abuel and Princess Listana and a walkover victory over Mapua’s Shaira Hermano and Niella Ramilo, who suddenly withdrew on the first day of the weekends-only tournament.
Former University of San Jose-Recoletos spiker Genie Sabas and Jeannie delos Reyes got RC Cola-Army B off to fast start with a 21-18, 21-13 win over University of the East’s Angelica Dacaymat and Jasmine Alcayde. However, they failed to get past Diaz and new partner Pau Soriano of the Navy who emerged victorious, 21-18, 24-22.
RC COLA-Army A’s Jovelyn Gonzaga and Nene Bautista found the FEU-Petron pair of Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza a tough nut to crack, escaping with a 19-21, 21-16, 15-13 win.
