The Philippine Coast Guard in Central Visayas will have a new ship in 2017, which is one of the 10 44-meter multi-role response vessels purchased by the government from Japan.
“These ships will be used for search and rescue. They have multi roles,” PCG Commandant Rear Admiral William Melad told Cebu Daily News.
The 10 ships are worth P9.267 billion.
The first of the 10 ships will arrive in the country this August 16, the second one will arrive before the year ends.
Melad said four more ships would be expected in 2017, and the last four ships would be in delivered in 2018.
The first ship to arrive will be named “Tubbataha,” which is derived from the Tubbataha Lighthouse in Mindoro Strait.
He said the names of the 10 ships would be taken from the old lighthouses in the country with historical significance.
Melad said that one of the names of the ships will be named as “Bagacay” derived from Bagacay Point Lighthouse in Liloan, Cebu.
