Cebu-born costume designer gets third Tony Award nomination
CEBU CITY, Philippines – Cebu-born Clint Ramos once again brings pride and honor to the Philippines as he gets his third Tony Award nomination for Best Costume Design of a Play for “Torch Song.”
Torch Song, a revival of Harvey Fierstein’s Tony-winning play, follows Arnold Beckoff’s odyssey to find happiness in New York.
“All he wants is a husband, a child and a pair of bunny slippers that fit, but a visit from his overbearing mother reminds him that he needs one thing more: respect,” the play’s description reads.
In 2018, Ramos was also nominated as “Best Costume Design of a Musical” for the Broadway musical “Once on This Island,” which also starred Lea Salonga as Erzulie, the goddess of love.
In 2016, Ramos became the first person of color to win an award in the category, Best Costume Design of a Play.
He was recognized for his work in the play “Eclipsed” which starred Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o.
The play, which featured Nyong’o, is the first all-black female play that was set in Liberia in the year 1992.
Clint is the son of Cebu-based lawyer, Erlinda Ramos.
Watch out for CDN Digital’s interview of Clint as he relives his childhood days in Cebu and how he worked to achieve his dreams.
