Globe announces Cebu Media Excellence Awards 2014 nominees

 

Forty nine out of 533 entries made it to the final nominations list of the Globe Cebu Media Excellence Awards (CMEA) to be held on September 25, 2014 at Cebu Marriott Hotel in celebration of the annual Cebu Press Freedom Week.

 

The awards pay tribute and gives recognition to print, broadcast, and digital media practitioners who have excelled in their respective fields.

 

“We are very happy over the great interest and overwhelming response to our call for entries. It was really a challenge doing the shortlist considering the sheer volume of wonderful materials that we received this year. They are all deserving of an award,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications as she noted that the number of entrees almost reached a five-fold increase from 114 submissions last year.

 

The finalists will vie for nine award categories namely:  Reporter of the Year for Print, Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year for Print/Online, Columnist of the Year, Photojournalist of the Year, Reporter of the Year for Television, Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year for Television, Reporter of the Year for Radio, Blogger of the Year, and Social Media Advocate of the Year.

 

Reporter of the Year for Print category was dominated by Cebu Daily News with five nominees, namely:  Marian Codilla “Shark for sale”;  Doris Bongcac, “Safe Shelter”;  Maria Aileen Paz Garcia – Yap, “’No Shark Stew For Us’ – Top Cebu resorts, hotel, refuse to serve shark fin soup; Will others follow?”; Jose Santino Bunachita, “Colors of Survival”; and Ador Mayol, “4-Part Series: Children Need Time to Heal”.  Completing the list are Rebelander Basilan, Sunstar, “By helping young survivors, counselor finds own healing” and Niña Sumacot – Abenoja, The Freeman, “They survived”.

 

It is SunStar’s turn, on the other hand, to make its presence felt in the Explanatory / Investigative Story of the Year for Print / Online category with three nominees, namely: Liberty Pinili and Cherry Ann Lim,          “Fish in Troubled Waters”; Rebelander Basilan, Davinci Maru, Gerome Dalipe and Cherry Ann Lim,  “Cordova: Cybersex Capital?”;  and Cherry Ann Lim, “Clean Ride”.  Also in the list are

Rene Borromeo, The Freeman, “Bumper to Bumper: Why Traffic is Getting Worse in Cebu” and Jose Santino Bunachita, Cebu Daily News, “A Bar Girl’s Journey.”

 

Again, SunStar has three nominees in the Columnist of the Year category.  They are Atty. Ruphil Bañoc, “Silot sa Pagpanapaw”; Bong Wenceslao, “We are part of the problem”; and Juan Mercado, “Unseen price tags.”  Joining them are  Jobers Bersales, Cebu Daily News, “Remembering Lahug Airport”;

Ernesto Lariosa,  Sunstar Superbalita, “Mga Batan-ong Nahisalaag” and Fr. Roy Cimagala, The Freeman, “Saving Childhood”.

 

Photojournalist of the Year, has seven nominated entries also mostly from SunStar, namely:    Amper Campaña, “Familiar Places”; Arni Aclao, “Madridejos”; Alex Badayos, “Help”;  Alan Tangcawan, “Remains of the Day”;  and Allan Cuizon, “The Dayhagon Elementary School in Medellin town, Cebu damaged by super typhoon Yolanda.” Others are Ferdinand Edralin, The Freeman, “Fisherman casting his net at Talisay, unmindful of the oil spill,”; and Wenceslao Mendoza, Cebu Daily News, “Historic Churches Damaged”.

 

For broadcast, Reporter of the Year for Television finalists are:  Alan Domingo, “Bulawan” and Lou-anne Mae Rondina, “Senior Citizen” both from GMA 7 while Patricia Andrea Pateña, “Kuwang sa Pangga”;  King Perez, “Pasko sa Basurahan” and Lesley Vestil, “Masulub-ong Pasko” represent TV5.

 

It is also a tight race between GMA 7 and TV 5 for the Explanatory/Investigative Reporter of the Year for Television.  Vying for the title from GMA 7 are Alan Domingo, “Bulawan”; Lou-Anne Mae Rondina, “Batang Drug Courier” and Rey Nikko Sereno, “Pasalamat sa mga Bol-anon”.  For TV 5, nominees are Patricia Andrea Pateña, “Kuwang sa Pangga” and King Perez, “Inanay nga Pagbangon.”

 

On the other hand, DYHP leads the number of most finalists for the Reporter of the Year for Radio which include:  Elias Bolonos, “DRUGAS – 21 ka mga kawani sa Barngay Ermita sa syudad sa Sugbu ang pulos niangkon nga tigamitan ug ginadiling drogas”; Futch Anthony Inso, “MCWD, mihimo na og lakang batok sa El Niño Phenomenon”; and Astra Zina Logarta, “Alternative learning system gilusad sa CPDRC alang sa mga inmates nga wala kahuman sa pagtungha”.  Also making it to the list are Rene Borromeo, DYLA, “Barangay Kamagayan himoong tourist spot” and Rowena Capistrano, DYRF, “Dili sa tanan higayon ginikanan maoy rason mag rugby ang mga bata”.

 

For digital media, nominees for the Blogger of the Year are:   Narciso Tapia (cebumd.com), Nancy Cudis (nancycudis.com), Vernon Go (vernongo.com), and Ruben Licera (INewMedia.org).  Social Media Advocate of Year finalists are:  Narciso Tapia, DYLA ℅ Jhunnex Napallacan, Ruben Licera, SunStar Network Exchange (SUNNEX) ℅ Nini Cabaero, and Nancy Cudis.

 

The judges’ decisions for print and broadcast categories shall be based on the following criteria: • Content (50%) Adherence to truth and responsible journalism as manifested in the accuracy, fair, and balanced presentation, and depth of reporting. • Style (25%) Ability to communicate clearly and effectively as shown by the writing style, clarity, logical presentation of issues, coherence, and fluidity of ideas. • Social Impact (25%) Involves the impact of the articles on effecting change.

 

For bloggers, the criteria are: • Consistency of content on the advocacy (50%) • Reader friendly presentation and design of content (20%) • Social Impact (30%).  For social media advocates:  • Content (50%) Consistency of content on the advocacy  (50 percent) • Reader Engagement (20%) Number of Comments to the post • Social Impact (30%) Retweets, Shares, Favorited, Likes Prizes and Awards.
