CEBU’S rising tennis sensations Norman Joseph Enriquez and Elizabeth Abarquez grabbed separate titles in the Cebuana Lhuillier Age-Group Tennis Tournament yesterday at Oroquieta City.
Enriquez, a product of the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, survived a hotly contested battle in the 18-Under boys’ division as he forced fellow Cebuano Marc Nicole Suson to retire after an injury in the early stages of the second set, 7-6 (4), 3-2 (Retired).
The tournament has been a nightmare for the 16-year-old Suson, who earlier suffered a finals loss to Janus Ringia of Koronadal City, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5, in the 16-Under boys’ category.
Meanwhile, Carcar Cebu’s Elizabeth Abarquez edged out Mary Aubrey Calma of Cagayan De Oro in an intense three set-thriller, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, for the 16-Under girls’ crown.
Abarquez tried to make it two titles in a row but she failed, losing to Calma in the 18-Under, 7-5, 6-3.
