NO drugs were found during a surprise inspection and raid conducted at the Mandaue City Jail.

Only two mobile phones, improvised weapons and some drug paraphernalia were found by around 200 operatives from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Mandaue City Police office during the Greyhound Operation early dawn yesterday.

Jail Warden Gil Inopia said he initiated this operation to determine if any contraband had been sneaked inside the jail facility.

“I requested this from the regional office and asked help from the PDEA and PNP,” said Inopia.

He also said he wanted to know if the inmates had illicit illegal activities inside, like making secret storage places and shanties.

While no illegal drugs were found inside the cells of the inmates, Inopia said he will investigate how the mobile phones were smuggled inside the jail despite strict inspection of visitors.

The phones are now being examined to see messages and phone logs and to charge the persons who smuggled the phones inside.

Jail guards will also be investigated to determine if they are in connivance with the inmates in bringing in contraband.

The operation lasted for three hours. The inmates were gathered together in one area and guarded while the authorities conducted the search.

The Mandaue City Jail is a congested facility that houses 1,311 inmates, with 800 of them facing illegal drugs cases.

“We hope that with the administration of the newly elected President, drug cases would slow down and inmates in jail facilities would be fully rehabilitated,” said Inopia.
