MORE than 200 traffic enforcers in Mandaue City began dancing Zumba every week to maintain their physical condition.

Glenn Antigua, chief of Operations of Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (Team), said they learned lately that many traffic enforcers take turns filing a leave due to illnesses, hypertension and arthritis.

“Kinahanglan man gud nga physically fit permi ang atong mga traffic enforcers kay crucial kaayo ni sila ilabi na nga problema sa traffic ang Mandaue ug strikto na ang pagpatuman nato sa traffic laws karon (It is important that traffic enforcers should always be physically fit as they play a crucial role especially that we have traffic problems in Mandaue, and we are now strictly implementing traffic laws),” Antigua said.

Nancy Toradio, 50, widow, of Barangay Ibabao-Estancia has been a traffic enforcer for 30 years already. “Nalingaw ra man ko aning akong trabaho mao nga nagdugay gyud ko dinhi kay wa man koy gipamati sa lawas. Required man mi nga moapil sa Zumba. Way problema, mosayaw gihapon ko (I enjoyed my job, that is why I stayed here long because I don’t have health problems. Since this is a requirement, I will join Zumba. No problem, I will dance),” said Toradio.

Antigua said that on Saturdays, around a hundred traffic enforcers including those assigned in the office join the Zumba dance exercise at the City Hall grounds while the other 100 traffic enforcers are on duty.

Those who work on Saturdays will take their Zumba dance exercise on Sundays.

Mandaue City government has hired Zumba dance instructor Ji Belocura of Barangay Mantuyong, Mandaue City, as a job order employee.

Belocura, a Zumba dance instructor for the past five years, earned his certificate from Holiday Gym and Spa.

Various groups also invited him to lead their Zumba dance exercise like a group of teachers, parents and in malls.

He was also hired by the Mandaue City Police to lead a Zumba dance exercise for the drug surrenderers.

He said that in three months time, traffic enforcers will see improvement in their health as long as they do regular exercise.

Geraldine Doncillo, 30, also joined the Zumba dance exercise upon the invitation of her sister, who is a traffic enforcer.

“Ganahan ko mo-apil aning mga Zumba dance aron mahilis akong cholesterol kay dako na kaayo ko (I like to join Zumba dance to lower my cholesterol level as I am too big already),” Doncillo said.

Mandaue City has a total of 210 traffic enforcers, and around 30 of them have hypertension and arthritis, said Antigua.
