Within 12 hours, beginning Thursday night, three drug suspects were killed in separate buy-bust operations in northern Cebu conducted by the police chiefs of Danao City and the towns of Compostela and Consolacion, respectively.

All three suspects reportedly engaged police operatives in a shootout after they each realized that they were transacting with police poseur buyers.

At around 6 p.m., Thursday, elements of the Provincial Public Safety Battalion and Danao City police led by Danao City police chief Senior Insp. Alejandro Batobalonos operated against 26-year-old Benedicto Cani Jr., an alleged marijuana dealer in Barangay Bato, Danao City.

According to police, Cani drew his gun when he sensed that he was transacting business with an undercover cop which allegedly led police operatives to fire back at him.

Cani’s live-in partner, identified as 42-year-old Estela Marie Paran, was arrested by police for allegedly also engaging in the marijuana trade.

One large plastic pack containing dried marijuana leaves and a revolver were recovered from Cani while one medium-sized plastic pack of marijuana was confiscated from Paran, police said.

Some four hours later, at around 10 in the evening in neighboring Brgy. Magay, Compostela town, police shot and killed a certain Armando Cababan, a native of Barangay Guinsay, Danao City.

Police said Cababan, who used to sell drugs in Danao City moved his operations to Compostela to evade arrest.

The law finally caught up with him, Thursday night, in an operation led by Senior Insp. Romeo Caacoy Jr., police chief of Compostela town.

According to police, Cababan noticed during the buy-bust operation that he was dealing with an undercover policeman; and so he drew out his gun.

Police operatives were reportedly able to return fire, killing Cababan in the exchange.

Four sachets of shabu (methamphetamine), a .45 caliber pistol, 200 pesos marked money and another 3,400 cash believed to be Cababan’s proceeds from his other drug transactions were recovered by police.

In Consolacion, police reported that they had shot to death a certain Willie Achay, said to be the town’s “No. 1” drug pusher, after he reportedly engaged policemen in a shootout at 6 o’clock yesterday morning in East Binabag, Barangay Tayud.

Achay, who sustained several gunshot wounds, was rushed to Mendero Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival.

Consolacion police chief, Senior Insp. William Homoc, said that while police were conducting a buy-bust operation against Achay, the suspect noticed that he was transacting with a police undercover agent and suddenly pulled out his gun.

According to police, Achay shot the police poseur-buyer but missed; prompting other policemen in the vicinity to retaliate.

Recovered from Achay were a .45 caliber pistol, several packs of shabu valued at P68,440 based on Dangerous Drugs Board value (DDB) estimates, P200 buy-bust money, another P500 believed to be his proceeds from selling drugs, a weighing scale and other shabu paraphernalia.
